Arguing over whether the C6 Grand Sport is properly a performance model below the Z06, or just an “appearance” trim level in a widebody chassis.... What say you?

I thought it was an appearance package.

Larger Z06 rear spoiler
Transmission cooler
Functional front and rear brake ducts for added brake system cooling
Unique light weight forged aluminum 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels (painted finish standard and chromed finish optional)
Z06 brakes, including cross-drilled 355 mm (14.0 in) front rotors and 340 mm (13 in) rear rotors
Specific rear axle ratio on automatic transmission equipped models
Can be ordered with 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim packages.

The Grand Sport was a trim package on top of the Z51 or whatever handling package. So you got the better sway bars and tires and brakes and other things, plus the grand sport stripes and badges.
So I guess it all comes down to whether or not you count the Z51 package as a different trim or not?

Performance model. I understand many just thought it was an upgrade package but here is why.

I believe the base C6, including Grand Sport models, had a steel hydroformed chassis.
The Z06 and ZR1 models had an aluminum frame.
I look at the Grand Sport as a Z06 minus the 7.0L V8 and aluminum chassis. To me, it’s a solid performance upgrade over a base car.

It’s a performance model. It contains way too many meaningful mechanical upgrades to just be an “appearance” package.

GS is what I would get if I had corvette money. All of the show, most of the go, no heatsoak problems.

I was thinking of the C7, totally spaced that the topic was on the C6.
C7 heat soak wasn’t really that bad anyway. It was a track only problem and I mean what kind of forced induction for extended amounts of time doesn’t produce massive amounts of heat anyway?

A new hydroformed frame was constructed from annealed, 4mm-thick 5745 aluminum alloy. The standard C5/C6 steel frame is 3 mm thick and weighs 502 pounds, while the Z06 frame is 4 mm thick and tips the scales at 392 pounds (22.5 percent lighter). Even better, the Z06 frame is 50 percent stronger in bending resistance and torsional stiffness. Continuing the theme of ongoing improvement, it’s also the first car to use laser welding and self-piercing rivets in a mass-production environment. The final result is that the Z06 Corvette tips the scales at just 3,130 pounds.
Because of the car’s low production volume, the aluminum frames are built at the Metalsa (formerly Dana Manufacturing) plant in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The completed frames are then shipped to Bowling Green for final assembly. In 2009 the higher-performance ZR1 was added to the Corvette lineup; it uses the same Z06 aluminum frame built at the Metalsa plant. As you can see, when it comes to modern Corvettes, every model is built on good foundations.

Performance - it has the suspension, grip and dry sump oiling from the Z06, but fatter and less powerful. 430hp is still plenty, though. I thought very hard about buying one a year or so ago.
